Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya runs south from Playa del Carmen through Akumal and toward Tulum. It trades Cancun's high-rise strip for lower-slung resorts, jungle, cenotes and better snorkeling. Sargassum can affect this coast in summer, so the resort you pick (and whether it rakes its beach daily) matters more here than in most places.
